It’s one of the biggest innovations to come along in years. Sagiv- New Horizons introduces the Ultra Slide, a complete sliding sleeve jointing system that goes beyond conventional engineering to deliver an evolutionary milestone in design: a single step, time saving, no leak, universal pipe fitting system for residential hot and cold water distribution.

Imagine a pipe fitting with built-in protection against installation failures!

With the Ultra Slide patented single step system, a single tool performs a single motion, saving up to 50% on installation time, with no revisits necessary. There’s no need for calibration, pre-expansion or beveling, and flawless performance is guaranteed over numerous thermal cycles.

“We expect a big buzz about the Ultra Slide at the upcoming MCE expo, because until now, problems with expansion fittings for the plumbing industry have not been properly addressed” says Jacob Inbar, CEO of New Horizons, Sagiv’s International Operations for marketing the UltraSlide. “Professionals in the industry know that for years, sealing solutions for sliding sleeves and expansion fittings weren’t very practical. But the Ultra Slide has surpassed those problems with its perfect no ‘O’ ring solution”.

The innovative ‘Dry Forever’ sealing solution that’s ‘O’ ring free

The Ultra Slide sliding sleeve jointing system uses a special radial tightening process for a ‘no leak’ durable radial grip, and features new generation brass fittings with special polymeric sleeves. Since the Ultra Slide is ‘O’ ring free with standard multi-layer pipes, it virtually eliminates all the problems associated with ‘O’ rings.

Convenient and economical universal pipe fitting design

The Ultra Slide suits all standard pipes – PEX, butt welded and overlapped AluPEX, EVOH PEX and Alu-PE-RT, a nd also enables a wide tolerance to non-uniform pipe profiles. The Ultra Slide system helps increase flow capacity, because the fitting has almost the same diameter as the pipe, so it doesn’t inhibit flow. Because the same tool and fittings are applicable over a wide range of pipe types and sizes, the Ultra Slide can help reduce stock levels.

“The Ultra Slide has already generated an enthusiastic response from a number of major pipe manufacturers who will be attending the exhibition,” continues Jacob Inbar. “And we are actively seeking to partner with plastic pipe manufacturers (PEX or Multi layer) and/or regional distributors who are serious about offering the next generation pipe fitting solution for residential hot and cold water usage”.

You’re invited for a unique demonstration at the Ultra Slide Booth – V33 Hall (PAD) 11, at the MCE Expo: March 23rd-27th 2010 at the Fiera Milano Exhibition Centre Rho, Italy.

About Sagiv

Sagiv, developers of the Ultra Slide system, have extensive experience in residential pipe systems for hot and cold water, including over 20 years in the design and manufacture of high quality compression fittings and system solutions for leading distributors worldwide.

Munich, January 12, 2010 – KraussMaffei Berstorff is now offering complete systems for continuous production of PU-insulated pipes. The extruded plastic pipe is given an insulating polyurethane layer, followed immediately by the addition of a protective polyethylene sheath. KraussMaffei Berstorff can call on many decades of technology competence and experience in pipe extrusion and in PU processing. This unique know-how enables the company to develop complete production solutions which successfully integrate different plastics processes.

The pipe – made of PE-HD, PE-X, PE-RT or PB according to the application – is produced on a conventional pipe extrusion line. A barrier layer can be applied. The pipe coming off the line is wound onto large steel drums ready for transfer to the second production system unit for application of the insulation layer. Alternatively, the insulation layer can be added to bought-in pipe. In this second unit, the pipe is unwound from the steel drums, heated if necessary, and fed under tension into a shaping conveyor. A PU mixing head dispenses the polyurethane mix at the inlet throat. The aluminium shaping jaws define the outer diameter of the insulation layer by limiting the foam volume. A film prevents the polyurethane from adhering to the aluminium shaping jaws. Once the PU insulation layer has cured, the pipe leaves the shaping conveyor and a PE outer sheath is applied, using a single-screw extruder with a sheathing die. This outer sheath is cooled, the whole composite pipe is hauled off and wound on a drum. The system allows the integration of anti-diffusion barrier layers and/or wires to monitor leakage.

Outstanding insulating properties
The standard version of this production system can be used to produce pipe with an outer diameter between 20 and 110 mm. For pipe diameters from 20 to 63 mm, a complete pipe element usually contains two pipes (outflow and return pipes). The exterior diameter of the pipe element will then be between 75 and 180 mm, depending on the diameter of the pipes and the thickness of the insulating layer.
The outstanding mixing performance of the PU mixing head produces an insulation layer with a very low thermal conductivity – between 0.02 and 0.03 W/m*K, depending on the type of foam. This highly efficient insulation makes these pipes the ideal solution whenever a significant temperature differential must be maintained between the medium flowing through the pipes and the ambient temperature. In some cases, the medium being transported is hotter – such as supply lines for combined heat and power or geothermal plants, or hot water pipelines in general. Insulated pipes are also sometimes required for potable water transport if there is a risk of the pipes freezing. In other cases, the medium must be kept cold or cool, for example, in air conditioning or refrigeration systems, or in pipes for transporting liquefied gas. With the current focus on energy savings, strong growth in demand can be expected in all these application areas.

New production system concept from a single-vendor partner
KraussMaffei Berstorff can now quote on complete, precision-planned systems for the production of media pipes and for applying the insulating layer and protective sheathing. By contrast with some other systems on the market, KraussMaffei Berstorff technology is characterized by sharply reduced wear on all system components, high system reliability and a high-quality end-product.

No limits on pipe length
Producing insulated pipe in a continuous process has several advantages compared with discontinuous production. One major advantage is the relatively high level of automation that results in lower labour costs. Furthermore, there are virtually no limits on the length of the pipe being produced. Contributing to this wide freedom is the design of the PU mixing head, which eliminates stoppages for cleaning and changing the mixing head. Longer pipe sections reduce the number of production system restarts and also the number of connections needing to be made when the pipe is laid. This in turn eliminates the risk of thermal bridges and leaks, and makes pipe laying easier and quicker.

“Our goal at Uponor is to effectively anticipate and meet the changing needs of the building marketplace,” says Jayson Drake, senior product manager, Plumbing and Fire Safety, at Uponor. “Now that we are the first to offer 3″ PEX, plumbing professionals no longer have to switch products when installing potable systems for both small-dimension and large-dimension applications. With Uponor AquaPEX, one product does it all.”

For connections, the 3” tubing uses Uponor’s proven WIPEX™ dezincification-resistant (DZR) brass fittings. WIPEX fittings require the use of a simple, inexpensive chamfering tool, a pair of WIPEX Sleeve Pliers and a wrench to create solid, strong connections in a matter of minutes. Also, because they are a cold-joint fitting, they require no curing time.

Uponor’s 3” AquaPEX tubing is available in 100-foot and 350-foot coils as well as 20-foot straight lengths — with custom-cut lengths also available to meet any application need.

KWD-globalpipe, 11.01.2010. Over the course of the past 30 years, plastic pipes have proven their value in many applications and have replaced pipe made of conventional materials, for example concrete, steel and also copper, around the world. Plastic pipe systems are mainly used as pressure pipes for water and gas distribution inside buildings and in underground construction but also increasingly for the transport of chemicals, food and compressed air in industrial applications. Examples for non-pressure pipe applications are sewage pipes and downspouts. This report focuses on plastic pressure pipes for indoor hot and cold water transport only, thus on plastic pipes for hot water systems in residential and non-residential buildings.

Major applications for indoor pressure pipes are:

Radiator connections

Hot water panel heating and panel cooling systems

Distribution pipes and rising mains for heating systems

Indoor distribution pipes, rising mains for hot and cold potable water

Indoor distribution pipes, rising mains for gas

Special applications, for example sprinkler installations, private connections for onsite heating, pipe grids for snowmelting systems, piping for swimming pools, industrial pipe lines, etc.

The following non-metallic pipe materials are used:

PE-X Crosslinked Polyethylene

PP Polypropylene

PB Polybutylene

CPVC Chlorinated Polyvinylchlorid

PE-RT Plyethylene raised temeratures

Composite pipes (PE-X / AL / PE-X or PE-RT / AL / PE-RT)

PP-R was one of the first plastic materials to replace metal for indoor pipe applications. Developed by Chemische Werke Hüls, now Sabic, PP-R at that time became increasingly popular in Western Europe, particularly in Germany, Austria, Spain and Italy. For example, PP-R was the most widely used plastic pipe material in Italy at the peak of its success.

The total amount of PP-R used will most likely remain the same but decline in European countries.

Detailled information on PP-R quantity estimates by countries can be found in our PP-R Market Report.

Reasons for the PP-R unit growth

PP-R pipe systems have a good price-performance ratio. Pipes and fittings are made of the same, relatively inexpensive material.

Large-diameter pipes and large fittings can be manufactured economically which makes PP-R pipes a preferred choice for all kinds of large projects.

Another success factor is the joining technique. With unbeatable inexpensive fittings and simple tools, homogeneous connections can be made very easily and safe by means of polyfusion welding. Comprehensive fitting product lines, also including fittings with metal inserts for screw connections, facilitate all pipeline configurations including the changeover to metal pipe systems.

Compared to the more flexible and easily bendable pipe, for example made of PE-X or composite pipes, the higher stiffness of PP-R pipes is a disadvantage yet hasn’t been an obstacle in the new PP-R markets.

For the assembly of PP-R pipe systems more fittings are needed than for others and thus, the process is more time consuming. In countries with low labor costs and low educational level, as in the CIS States, Turkey, Asia and South America, this is overcompensated by the low material costs and the ease of the assembling process.

Especially in these countries which are often in transition from steel pipe to plastic pipe, the robust, thickwalled PP-R pipes with their straight pipeline configuration are particularly appreciated.

KWD-globalpipe has published now the KWD Market Report “PP-R Pipe Systems for Hot Water Installations worldwide 2009”, 86 pages, printed with many colored charts and tables, in addition the report will be delivered as a pdf-file on CD-ROM. Author ist Achim Seydel, who has a 35 years experience in the plastics pipe industry.

The aim of this report is to describe the current status of the indoor PP-R pipe system market, to provide an overview of the product lines, product specifications, production processes and competitive situation in the industry as well as to identify market potentials and possible future developments. The PP-R Market report is available immediately. Our subscribers pay only 480,- Euro (others 600,- Euros). The PP-R report is available in english and german language.
