According to reports, the Aliaxis Group (which includes Friatec, Sanit, Abu, Ipex/Canada, akatherm, Wefa Plastic etc.) has signed a “letter of intent” to take over of the Italian DALPEX Group (which produces inter alia 20 million m of PEX/aluminium multilayer pipes per annum). We believe the acquisition will go ahead. Once the North American pipe manufacturer IPEX was forced to withdraw completely from the sale of multilayer pipes in the plumbing sector a few months ago, owing to intolerable legal disputes particularly in the USA (multilayer pipes are still being supplied to the heating sector), and restrict its plumbing system business to PEX pipe systems, the Aliaxis Group now had the possibility to acquire DALPEX on amicable terms, and presumably also succeed. Pipe joints require a high level of guaranteed performance and as a consequence the industry uses advanced technology in both fitting manufacture and joint sealing. AMI has reviewed the state of the European pipe industry – around 3.5 million tonnes of plastics are used per annum. With fittings, the market is growing in applications in sewer, water, plumbing, road drainage, gas and soil and waste. “The fittings industry in Europe has enjoyed strong growth in recent years”, remarked consultant Jon Nash, “and can look forward to a robust future despite the predicted slowdown in construction”.
