With an annual production time of 7,000 hours, about 300,000 Euros can be saved in electricity costs alone if a pipe extrusion line is equipped with the components presented by battenfeld-cincinnati on this occasion. They were demonstrated on the example of a coextrusion line producing a 2-layer pipe for pressure pipe applications, which reached an output of 750 kg/h and a line speed of 0.93 m/min. Major contributors to the enormous energy savings were the uniEX 35-30 and solEX 75-40 extruders used, as well as the special helix 250-3 VSI-T+ pipe die with an EAC (efficient air cooling) internal cooling system, and the Green Pipe downstream equipment.

Extruders from the uniEX single screw series with a 30 D processing length are extremely versatile thanks to their wide processing window. They are highly energy-efficient because of their AC motors equipped with air-cooled frequency converters. The models from the solEX series with their 40 D processing units offer the ultimate in terms of efficiency. Here, energy-efficient operation is ensured by an AC motor with a water-cooled frequency converter.

battenfeld-cincinnati has revised its helix VSI-T pipe dies, the proven equipment for PO processing, with a special focus on energy consumption. The core component of the new helix 250 VSI-T+
3-layer pipe die is a cooling basket installed between the spiral mandrel and the lattice basket. The EAC internal cooling system blows in cold air for internal pipe cooling and subsequently transfers the heated air to the Labotek material drying system. This internal pipe cooling system also improves pipe quality; the sagging effect (uneven wall thickness distribution) is significantly reduced especially in large-diameter pipes.

The third component contributing to the overall energy savings is the Green Pipe downstream equipment with its “green cooling” system. It operates with energy-efficient, frequency-controlled vacuum and water pumps. This cooling system also operates with a water volume flow cut by almost 90%. This is achieved by pumping the cooling water into the last tank and then passing it on from one tank to the next in the opposite direction to the extrusion process. With the improvements demonstrated, energy cost savings of at least 30% can be achieved.

Further savings can be realized by two additional factors presented by the partner Labotek A/S from Frederikssund, Denmark and the material manufacturer SABIC, domiciled in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Labotek ranks among the leading suppliers of energy-efficient drying systems for the plastics industry. Jointly with battenfeld-cincinnati, the company has developed an EAC variant of its combination dryer, which was shown directly in conjunction with the line. The drying system operates with two separate drying zones. The hot air drawn from the pipe die is blown into the top zone. The bottom zone is laid out as a conventional drying zone with a dry air drying system to ensure the necessary degree of dryness for the material. The dryer on display consumes no more than 11 kW for drying 1,500 kg/h of granulate. By contrast, conventional dryers need 92 kW for the same throughput, which means enormous energy savings in the order of 89%.

SABIC has developed a new PE compound specially designed for energy-efficient pipe extrusion. Vestolen A-Rely 5924 R 10.000 was used to produce the pipe during the Open House demonstration. Compared to a conventional type of PE-100, it requires measurably less energy for melting and processing in an extruder.

Georg Fischer is to acquire a majority stake in Hakan Plastik in Cerkezköy (Istanbul, Turkey), with an option to acquire the outstanding shares. The current management team will remain in place under the supervision of the current owners to guarantee the continuity of the company’s successful operations and execute the significant synergies with Georg Fischer. Closing is anticipated for July 2013. The parties have agreed not to disclose financial details of the transaction.

Hakan Plastik was founded in 1965 by the Karadeniz family. With a focus on technological innovation, the company has continuously expanded its presence in the manufacturing and sales  of plastic piping systems for the building technology, water and gas distribution as well as irrigation applications.

In 2012, the company generated sales of CHF 105 million (TRY 200 million) with a workforce of approximately 650 people. Its production sites are located in Cerkezköy, about 100 km north-west of Istanbul, and in Sanliurfa (Anatolia, Turkey). This second plant was opened in early 2013.

KWD-globalpipe, 22.04.2013. Central to its success is the new equipment introduced at NPE 2012. To best serve the needs of global customers, a new position has been created to reflect the complexity of worldwide integrated projects, and the executive team at battenfeld-cincinnati USA has been adjusted to meet those needs.

COLOURS OF INNOVATION: The desire to avoid stagnation and continuously improve their products, as well as to find new fields of application and create solutions quickly, has resulted in some of the well-known aquatherm product groups. This often led to systems being named as they emerged and has resulted in naming conventions that no longer accurately convey the suitable applications for the pipe.

An example of this is climatherm, which was developed as a pipe for air conditioning, but then qualified for many other areas because of its exceptional properties. The air conditioning sector is still important but it is only one of the main applications for climatherm. Sadly, its original name implies that it is limited to this area only.

Another issue is that many of our pipes and systems have names that do not relate to each other, and in turn do not relate those products to their parent company, aquatherm. Furthermore, other companies from different industries around the globe use similar names, creating confusion between aquatherm products and their products. The desired uniqueness of our system identification is lost.

Thus, the next logical step is to introduce a naming system that matches and unifies aquatherm’s products. During the transition period, the products will have the old and the new system name. This will help to facilitate familiarization and orientation in the market.

THE NEW LOGO: aquatherm’s logo is the primary visual representation of the company. It is representative for the company and provides a definitive identification and differentiation from competitors. The under floor heating pipe is manufactured from temperature-resistant polyethylene and is up to 30% more bendable than comparative products while retaining its dimensional stability.

The JANOlen Futura composite pipe, available in the dimensions of 16 and 17 mm, is extraordinarily simple and straightforward to install.

The Lubrizol Corporation announces today its plans to increase its CPVC resin capacity through a joint investment in a manufacturing facility with Sekisui Chemical Company, Ltd. The new facility, which is part of the company’s Phase I capacity expansion, will be located in Thailand and will enable Lubrizol to meet its global customer demands, particularly in Asia Pacific. Initial resin capacity during this first phase will be 30,000 metric tons with a total investment of approximately $50 million over a two-year period and with full operation planned by the end of 2014, subject to regulatory approvals.

Phase I will be designed to allow for a future expansion as part of Phase II that will double the size of the plant to 60,000 metric tons with an additional investment of $50 million. The Phase II expansion is expected be operational by the end of 2016.

Lubrizol recognizes the global growth potential for CPVC products and is committed to ensuring product availability. CPVC resin manufactured at this site will be designed to meet Lubrizol’s and Sekisui’s required performance specifications and quality standards. Both companies will continue to independently market and sell CPVC resins and manufacture their own CPVC compounds for their respective customers.

The line is designed for slitting of narrow and thin aluminium coil in soft condition, while preserving its surface and flatness.
Accurate tooling and control systems ensure a consistent slit edge quality and uniform tension throughout the full coil. Thus the achieved very low burr, minimized edge deformation and minimized camber as well as excellent flatness lead to a stable behaviour during further processing of multilayer tubes at the customer.

An automated packaging line is integrated in the slitter which reduces the risk for damage and contamination.
The slitting line is capable of producing full size coils with an outside diameter of up to 1700 mm.

As peeling tests on different types of tubes have proven that the adhesion with chemical degreased aluminium is much better than with only thermally degreased aluminium, Aleris installed a dedicated chemical degreasing line.

Our material for multilayer pipes now has a special chemical degreased surface for excellent adhesion between aluminium and polyethylene.
